Functionalization of the cyclo-P5 ligand in pentaphosphaferrocene by main group nucleophiles

The η5-P5 cycle of pentaphosphaferrocene molecule was shown for the first time to be able to bind nucleophilic groups NH2, NMe2, PH2 and CH2SiMe3 in mild conditions and to form therefore P-N, P-P and P-C chemical bonds, respectively. The resulting anionic complexes [{Cp*Fe(η4-P5)}2N]3, [Cp*Fe(η4-P5NMe2)], [Cp*Fe(η4-P5PH2)] and [Cp*Fe(η4-P5CH2SiMe3)] were characterized by X-ray structural analysis and spectroscopy. The η4-P5 cycle loses planarity and possesses the open-envelope geometry. The energetic profiles of the reactions clarify the formation of these products.
