LITHIUM HYDRIDE TECHNOLOGY OF OBTAINING PURE RARE EARTH METALS

Description

The technology is based on the method of obtaining pure rare earth metals (REM) from pure oxides by means of their chlorination followed by thermal treatment of the chlorides with lithium hydride at a temperature of 700—900°С. Further hydrometallurgical treatment of the reaction mass includes washing with water at room temperature and drying the metal hydride powder. Dehydrogenation is performed in vacuum at 800—900°С, resulting in dense metal powders.

Technical and economical advantages:

The technology allows obtaining:

  • anhydrous chlorides and hydrides of REMs, as a side commercial product;
  • metals in the powdered state;

The side products of reaction are easily utilized.

Energy-consuming stages of distillation or refining are excluded.

Application areas

  • Metallurgy.
  • Production of permanent magnets, metal hydride rechargeable batteries, batteries.

Stage of Development and Place of Usage

The technology has been mastered with the larger-scale laboratory equipment allowing one to obtain small lots of samples; the technology has also been tested at a number of plants of Novosibirsk and Krasnoyarsk at the level of semi-industrial production.

Patent situation

Patent was granted in 1994 in Russian Federation.

Commercial proposals

Within contacts and agreements, the NIIC is ready to perform:

  • research (involving other metals and alloys), shipment of experimental lots of anhydrous chlorides, hydrides, powdered REMs about 100g  per cycle;
  • assistance in establishing production (participation in joint ventures, search for investors, and partners).

Proposals from foreign companies for shipment of large lots are available, but the Institute cannot fulfill them due to the absence of experimental production.
